Wilberfoss AFC Presentation and Awards Evening 2016/17

Saturday night saw Wilberfoss AFC hold their end of season Presentation and Awards Evening following a very successful and progressive 2016/17 season.

The First Team had managed to gain back to back promotion finishing as champions of Division Two whilst Paul Jacques young Reserve Team picked up some credible results and made history as the first team from Reserve C to reach a Cup Final. Although the result did not go the way of ‘Foss the simple fact they reached this stage was credit to Paul and his team.

First Team

Managers Player of the Season

This was jointly won between Tom Matthews & Oliver Newby – The pair struck a great understanding on the field during the season scoring some vital goals which helped their team gain promotion with manager Palfreyman being unable to decide on an outright winner.

Players player of the Year.

Rich Tinson – this was a unanimous decision, with the veteran midfielder producing some superb selfless performances with notable goals against his former club Barmby Moor and claiming Goal of the Season with a brilliant back heel flick in season defining win over Stamford Bridge.

Reserve Team

Managers Player of the Season

Dan Jacques – claimed the award after a string of impressive performances throughout the season. His set pieces proved vital with many of his goals coming from free kicks or the penalty spot.

Players player of the Year

Another unanimous decision, this year won by the experienced Ian Cappleman. Following a serious injury to reserve captain James Gaines, Ian took the armband and led by example adding vital experience to a very youthful team.

Club Awards

Mike Murr Memorial Trophy – Golden Boot

Won for the second year running by ‘Foss Captain Oliver Newby – Newby’s 26 goals proved invaluable over the season which included a hat trick against local rivals Barmby Moor which secured ‘Foss the league title.

Tom Brooks Award – Young Player of the Year

This year the award was won by Alex Zachariou. Alex impressed during pre – season and went on to produce some brilliant performances as the 17 year cemented his position in the team.

The night which was hosted by Wilberfoss AFC chairman Mark Newby who went on to thank both managers Andrew Palfreyman & Paul Jacques for their continued efforts along with a special recognition for Matthew Wain on his England Veterans caps.

Finally as the presentation grew to a close Mark presented a Special Recognition Award to Brian Walker. Brian who devoted over 30 years to the club retired this season and was presented with a special award for his time and commitment to the club.
