‘Foss Reserves dominate Cliffe
Cliffe FC Reserves 1-6 Wilberfoss AFC Reserves
Yew Tree Associate sponsored Wilberfoss AFC Reserves travelled to Cliffe on Saturday looking to complete a league double over the side who they played all the way back on the opening weekend of the season winning 4-3.
With Foss’ going into the game knowing Cliffe’ 1st team didn’t have a game they knew they would be up against it and have to be on their game from the first whistle. Paul Jacques’ side usually not starting well flew out of the traps and found themselves 1-0 up within the first 10 minutes when persistence paid off as Alex McCallum chased down Cliffe’ centre back as he fluffed his clearance straight to Foss wideman Sam Gibney who with his weaker foot chipped the ‘keeper from the corner of the area into the top corner of the net. As the game restarted Foss’ kept pressing high and with success as Cliffe kept over turning possession. From a throw in gained from this the ball found Dan Jacques with yards of space 30 yards out from goal and with the ‘keeper off his line he let fly and with his effort dipping and hitting the underside of the bar it bounced in to give Foss’ a deserved 2-0 lead.
Cliffe finally started to get in the game as they started to launch the ball long over the top with this being their only option as the Foss’ midfield stopped them from playing. This created a few half chances for the home side but nothing to test ‘keeper Wetherall. With Dodds returning the to starting 11 he looked to use his pace against Cliffe centre back and managed to beat him to the ball on the edge of the area and was brought down giving Jacques a chance at goal. As he hit the free-kick goal wards the wall parted giving him a straight drive across the goal into the net to take his tally for the season into double figures. With only 35 minutes on the clock Foss’ managed to increase their lead to 4-0 when Matt Oxley crossed a ball in which Cliffe defender was unable to control and landed nicely for Dave Laverack to ghost in at the back post and slot the ball past the ‘keeper.
At half-time Paul Jacques expressed his delight at the performance and to make sure they kept on top of their opponents and added goals to the scoreline. Whilst also letting the lads know the good news that currently results were going their 1st teams way for them to be crowned Champions. With the side comfortably ahead he brought on both substitutes Jacques and Knowles for Wormsley and Oxley. Oxley was only off for 5 minutes as Dan Jacques went down injured and Wormsley returned back to the game later on in the half.
As the second half started both teams cancelled each other out with either really creating any clear cut chances. It wasn’t until the 70th until another goal came and it was the home side who managed to get a consolation goal when Dave Laverack blocked a shot on the edge of the box with the second ball falling to an unmarked Cliffe attacker who produced a fine effort into the top corner of the net. It didn’t take Foss’ long to regain their 4 goal advantage when Charlie Dodds was released through on goal and with no defender able to keep up with him he marked his return with a goal as he finished neatly across the ‘keeper into the bottom corner off the post.
The game was wrapped when Oxley put a ball over the top for Wormsley who bravely went into a challenge with the onrushing ‘keeper and just got their ahead of him to lift the ball goal wards and see it roll into the net for 6-1.
Manager Paul Jacques said after the game he was pleased with the performance from everyone and good to see his team back playing the sort of football they can whilst executing a high pressing game. The Reserves travel to Heworth Green next week knowing they have to beat them to have any chance of finishing 3rd in the league.
MOM – Ian Cappleman – Could of been a handfuls of players but with a commanding performance at centre half thwarting many attacks all afternoon the skipper edged it on the day.
