‘Foss dumped out of East Riding Cup
Riccall United (Res) 5-2 Wilberfoss AFC
Wilberfoss AFC travelled to Riccall United on Saturday hoping to overcome their Reserve Team and progress into the Quarter Finals of the East Riding Cup. Andrew Palfreyman chose to rest a number of players who carried knocks and in addition had 5 players away or suspended.
Palfreymans reshuffled side started brightly creating a number of early opportunities however were unable to convert. Riccall took the lead on 15 minutes when ‘Foss keeper Rich Cole misjudged the flight of a free kick allowed the ball to be prodded home. It was soon 2-0 when Rich Tinson failed to clear and the Riccall striker took advantage.
As the half wore on the East Yorkshiremen started to take control of possession forcing a series of corners and free kicks however were unable to take advantage and it was the home side who increased their lead on the stroke of half time. Another long ball forward allowed the Riccall right winger to beat stand in left back Mark Willoughby and with the ‘Foss defence nowhere to be seen the winger cooly finished to make it 3-0.
Following strong words at half time ‘Foss came flying out of the traps in the second half pinning Riccall into their own half creating a number of early chances. It was soon 3-1 when good work between McCallum and Newby allowed Willoughby to cross for Tom Matthews to stoop and fired home. Soon after Newby blazed over from 12 yards and moments later provided a teaser of a cross that evaded the onrushing Willoughby. As the second half wore of Riccall started to create chances of their own however it was ‘Foss who struck again. A deep cross from the right was met by the head of Matthews at the back post who nodded back to Newby who volleyed home to make it 3-2.
Willoughby then had the chance to draw the game level home however saw his powerful drive fly wide of the upright. Poor defending again cost ‘Foss as against the run of play Tom Chelin was caught on the ball and the Riccall right winger made him pay as he smashed the ball into the top left hand corner of Richard Coles goal. ‘Foss continued to create chances however were unable to make them pay and on 89 mins a simple route one ball allowed a Riccall striker to round Cole and roll the ball into an empty net.
After the game ‘Foss chief Palfreyman commented “We were poor all over the pitch first half, the reshuffle of players didn’t help but we simply weren’t good enough. In the second half we played very well in patches and on another day if we’d taken our chances at crucial points it could of been a different story. The best of luck to Riccall United in the next round”
MOM: Oliver Newby – the ‘Foss captain worked tirelessly up front on his own creating a number of chances and notching his 6th goal in 6 matches.
