‘Foss Reserves lose ground on league leaders

Yew Tree Associate sponsored Wilberfoss Reserves welcomed Poppleton to the Storking Lane ground in a top of the table clash with ‘Foss knowing they could close the gap to 1 point.

Both teams started the game at a high pace with the game going end to end but without any real clear cut chances to take the lead. It was Poppleton who gained the first chance when a corner wasn’t dealt with but Poppleton were unable to steer the ball goal wards. After back to back Man of the Match performances it was Sam Hendry who kept the game level as Poppleton broke through on goal but was unable to take the lead after a brilliant double save from the ‘Foss keeper. ‘Foss’ first real chance came when a ball over the top saw Alex McCallum beat the offside trap and as the keeper ran out to close him down lifted the ball over him to see his effort bounce agonisingly wide. With 10 minutes to go before half time Poppleton got a corner which was delivered back post and struck goal wards but blocked on the line which then fell kindly for No.8 to tap home to make the scoreline 1-0 in favour of the away side. ‘Foss went into the break feeling bit hard done by to be losing but knew they could get back into the game and had to keep battling hard for the chances to come.

The second half continued with the high tempo play from both sides with ‘Foss trying to get that goal to bring them back level and into the game. Again not many chances falling either teams way with Manager Paul Jacques looking to change something to get that break through. Charlie Dodds came on for Dan Jacques as they tried to get the ball over the top using Dodds’ pace. It was Poppleton who looked to have sealed the game though when a ball over the top had their midfield man run through and catch the ‘Foss back line with a 3 on 1 situation and he calmly made the game 2-0. It could of been 3-0 not long after as again a long ball over the top found keeper Sam Hendry come out and misjudge the clearance but luckily Poppletons striker couldn’t turn the ball into the empty net. ‘Foss knew they had to go for it and went to a back 3 and pushed an extra man forward as substitutes Jacob Allen and Ollie Jacques came on. It seemed to have paid off when Alex McCallum picked up the ball on the edge of the box and jinxed through 3 players before putting the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-1. But the more ‘Foss pushed forward now looking for the equaliser it created more gaps at the back giving Poppleton more chances to seal the game. ‘Foss felt hard done by near the end when Striker Dodds went through on goal to be brought down from behind as the referee waved play on instead of pointing the spot.

As the game played out and the final whistle went and Poppleton celebrated their hard fought 2-1 victory like a cup final proving how hard they had to battle to gain the 3 points. No consolation to ‘Foss who felt a point would of been a fair result and have to pick themselves up before next weeks home game against Heworth Green.

Manager Paul Jacques said after the game despite the loss he couldn’t fault anyone’s performance and was unlucky in the result.

MOM – Was given to the squad as they couldn’t pick out one individual on the day.
