‘Foss Reserves Play Out 6 Goal Thriller

Wetherby Athletic Reserves 3-3 Wilberfoss AFC Reserves

Yew Tree Associate sponsored Wilberfoss AFC Reserves travelled to Wetherby Athletic on Saturday in league action after two cup weekends. They knew this would be their hardest game of the season so far with their opponents having produced some good results in their debut season in the league.

It was Wetherby that started on the front foot with ‘Foss not being able to get control of the ball with all their play being very rushed. 8 minutes in Wetherby caught ‘Foss flat footed at the back with a long ball over the top leaving Wetherby’s No.10 completely free in front of goal as he rounded Sam Hendry and passed the ball into the net. This kick started ‘Foss with them changing around their front 3. This seemed to work when Charlie Dodds got the better of his full back and cut in on goal but was unable to finish. Dodds knew he had the beating of his man and started to get a lot of success creating chances for himself, Alex McCallum, Dan Jacques and Joe Drydal but none of which were able to convert to bring the scores level. After another week of putting pressure on their opponents but no goals to show for it Wetherby’s No.11 picked the ball up on the left and cut in across the goal and then sent the ball back across the goal finding the bottom corner making it 2-0 to the home side.

‘Foss knew this wasn’t a fair reflection of how the game had gone but had to start taking their chances. Straight from kick-off Jacques drove forward playing the ball outside to Dodds who again beat his full back and fizzed a ball across the box finding Sam Gibney at the back post who controlled the ball well and drove it into the net bringing ‘Foss back to only one goal behind going into half-time even though they knew they could of been 2/3 goals in the lead with the clear-cut chances they had had. Manager Paul Jacques relayed this message during the break expressing the next goal was vital.

Wetherby came out the second half how they did the first and had their own chances to extend their lead with ‘Foss struggling to get their foot on the ball once again. In the 55th minute Wetherby extended their lead when they worked the ball down their right hand side delivering the ball across the 6 yard box to which it then somehow found its way into the back of the net off the back of No.9. Manager Paul Jacques then made changes pushing two up top knowing they had to get back into the game and fast. It wasn’t until the 68th minute when this pressure paid off when Gibney dropped off Wetherby’s back four to pick up the ball turning on it straight away before sending a ball through both centre backs to which Alex McCallum ran on to out muscling their centre back to poke the ball past the keeper to bring ‘Foss back to within one goal of Wetherby now having the momentum of the game. ‘Foss then drew level with 10 minutes left when David Laverack delivered a ball into the box and found Ollie Jacques’ run to the front post who flicked the ball on powering it past their keeper and into the top corner. For the remainder of the game both teams pushed to try grab the winner they felt they deserved but neither team was able to add to their tally for the afternoon both taking a point before they meet again next Saturday at the Storking Lane Ground.

Manager Paul Jacques said after the game that his team showed great character and togetherness to fight back from 2-0 and 3-1 down but needed to be more clinical in front of goal and kill games off when on top.
