Wilberfoss AFC Reserves Edge 7 Goal Thriller

Wilberfoss AFC Reserves 4-3 Cliffe FC Reserves

Yew Tree Associate sponsored Wilberfoss AFC Reserves started their league campaign with 3 points after a 7 goal thriller against Cliffe FC. Having had a 2 goal cushion twice in the game ‘Foss managed to see out the game for the victory.

‘Foss didn’t start brightly, however enjoyed much of the possession in the early stages. The team failed to create break down the Cliffe defence however were persistent and kept the ball well. It was Cliffe who created the first few openings which came mainly from set pieces where they used their height advantage the good effect. The deadlock was finally broken in the 10th minute when a corner was half cleared and fell to the Cliffe striker who’s shot took a slight deflection to squeeze into the bottom corner out of the reach of ‘Foss keeper Sam Hendry. This kick started ‘Foss and they quickly gained control of the game after the setback and started to penetrate Cliffe’s back four. Some good pressing from ‘Foss striker Jake Whitfield forced a Cliffe centre back to give the ball away to w ‘Foss winger Sam Gibney who calmly finished passed the keeper to make it 1-1. Paul Jacques then made use of the new ‘roll on roll off’ substitute system in Reserve C this year and brought on Charlie Dodds upfront to give a different outlet upfront. It immediately paid off as Dodds was sent through after a delightful ball by Gibney to slot the ball into the bottom corner to put ‘Foss ahead going into half time.

‘Foss knew the next goal was vital and had to start better than they had in the first half. After a few shaky moments they managed to get back up to speed and settle into the game again. With the pace of Sam Gibney, Charlie Dodds and Joe Drydal constantly causing the Cliffe defence it was eventually a run from Dodds which saw his shot/cross find the far corner of the net to give ‘Foss a two goal cushion. Cliffe hit back straight away as the ‘Foss defence switched off and let the  Cliffes winger get away to deliver a cross to the back post where their striker had managed to lose his man and head into an open net.

‘Foss again knew they had to get another goal as Cliffe pressed for the equaliser. Again they managed to get in behind the Cliffe defence, this time through Sam Gibney and he delightfully chipped the ball over the advancing keeper to again give ‘Foss a two goal cushion making it 4-2. With 15 minutes to go Cliffe pushed on with ‘Foss seeming to get further and further back into their own half and again grabbing a quick fire goal to make it 4-3 and a nervous last few minutes.

‘Foss managed to see out the game after a few scares in the last 10 minutes with ‘keeper Sam Hendry to thank pulling off some good saves to keep the score 4-3.

Manager Paul Jacques said after the game that he was happy to start the season with a win but hoped to start both halves quicker and kill games off when given the chance.

MOM – Sam Gibney – Tormented his full back all game twisting and turning him every time he got the ball and took his two goals well.
