Wilberfoss AFC Reserves 6 – 0 Malt Shovel Reserves
Wilberfoss Reserves returned to league action against Malt Shovel after not playing a league game since 17th October. After starting the season against the current top 3 in the league the reserves were looking to kick start their season.
Foss started brightly creating a few early half chances on the edge of Malt Shovels box but were not able to make a breakthrough. The closest Foss came was when Charlie Dodds was put through one on one but he was unable to take advantage. As the 25th minute approached in the first half Foss’ started to become more frustrated at not being able to break the deadlock when a counter attack for Malt Shovel resulted in a free kick in the edge of Foss’ box. The resulting free kick was cleared and with the Malt Shovel pushing players forward Charlie Dodds was released through on goal for the second time in the match but this time he coolly slotted the ball past the keep to make it 1-0. Foss continued to press looking for a second hitting the bar and post in the process whilst goalkeeper Sam Hendry went close when clearing the ball from his own goal with the wind behind him his clearance bounced over the Malt Shovel keeper and narrowly over the bar. 5 minutes before half time Foss finally made it two when Nathan Knowles was released down the left and delivered an early ball in which Dan Jacques passed into the bottom corner. A third and fourth came quickly just before half time with Charlie Dodds grabbing his 2nd and 3rd of the game to claim the match ball before half time. At half time manager Paul Jacques was not happy with the performance and tempo of the play and demanded more from the team in the second half.
Foss started the second half brightly and kept Malt Shovel camped in their own half. It took until the 70th minute for Foss’ to add to their tally when Nathan Knowles’ split the defence with a killer pass to release Dan Tunnicliffe who calmly finished in the bottom corner out of the keepers reach. Manager Paul Jacques started to then give his substitutions a run out with all 3 coming on in the space of 10 minutes. Foss kept pressing looking for that 6th goal to take them back into positive goal difference and it came 5 minutes from the end when Mark Hughes managed to head the ball in after the keeper had saved well from David Laveracks shot.
With the game finishing 6-0 manager Paul Jacques was pleased with the result but knows the team has to be more clinical when they come up against stronger opposition. Foss hope for a good week of weather as they welcome Civil Service to the Storking Lane Ground next Saturday.
Man of the Match: Charlie Dodds- His constant running up gave the Malt Shovel defenders no rest and gained his first hat-trick for the club, taking his tally to 6 goals for the season.
