Brian Walkers men commenced their pre season campaign today against a strong and competitive Boroughbridge AFC. Although controlling large parts of the game unfortunately were on the end of a 2-0 defeat. Walker gave Willoughby, Howat, O’Brien their debuts along with the returning players Walker, Houlder & Newby.
Against the run of the play Bridge took the lead with a long ball that caught out the Foss defence but still with a lot to do the striker fired a low shot in the the bottom right hand corner beyond the reach of Parkin.
Moments later Foss almost equalised through Houlder as he cleverly made space before his left foot strike smashed off the upright. Right on half time Newby again went close to equalising when good work from Houlder produced a teasing cross onto the box and Newbys header went narrowly wide.
Just as Foss started to take control on the second half Boroughbridge won a corner and their centre midfielder found himself unmarked after sloppy marking to head home from 6 yards.
Wilberfoss continued to press forward and in patches played some superb football and if not for a brilliant performance for the Boroughbridge goalkeeper would of taken more from the game.
Post match Walker commented “I was delighted with the work rate and attitude from every single one of them. I was pleased to introduce a number of new younger players into the team with Sam Gibney & Sam McAllister showing a lot of maturity. On another day the score would of been very different but I was pleased that we continued to pass the ball and continue to play for 90 mins and it was great to get some minutes on the pitch.”
Man of the Match: Mark Willoughby.
